Financial Literacy Course

Course Goal:
Demystifying personal investing to ensure your financial security

Instructor:
Joan Finsilver – Joan Finsilver is an investment professional who has spent 30 years on Wall Street. She has extensive knowledge of all aspects of the brokerage business: securities research, corporate finance, institutional sales and portfolio management.

For 20 years Joan was a senior partner at Brean Murray & Company, a midsize full service investment bank and asset management company, where she managed assets for high net worth individuals and provided strategic advice to CEO’s of high growth emerging businesses. Earlier in her career she was a security analyst at Bankers Trust Company and a portfolio manager at Fred Alger & Company.

Joan currently manages high net worth assets, serves on the Advisory Board of Launch Advisors, which provides strategic planning for small businesses and is a consultant to Umbanet, a software start-up. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of The New York Society of Security Analysts. Joan received an MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business and has a BA from Ripon College, where she served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years. She lives in Manhattan and is an avid gardener, swimmer and physical fitness enthusiast.

The Basics of Investing
Week 1 Wall Street- what is it, what happens, who are the players
Week 2 What are stock or bond mutual funds, how do I evaluate them & which are right for me? How do I know if I have a good broker
Weeks 3-4 What makes a “good” business; how to value individual stocks or any business you may want to invest in or buy. Balancing your portfolio for your personal circumstances.

In this course you will learn a little about how Wall Street works: how to evaluate stock & bond mutual funds; the basic techniques for valuing individual stocks, bonds and businesses; basic rules of equity investing and how to evaluate your broker.

Young Women’s Leadership Retreat Description

(Approximate Age of Participants 21-early 30s)

Overview:
The Woodhull Institute convenes small group leadership retreats to present the concepts of ethical leadership; to teach professional development skills and to direct young women to networks, mentors and resources that can channel their leadership aspirations into practical and attainable achievements.

Format:
A team of committed professionals present basic empowerment skills that prepare young women for leadership roles in their communities and workplaces. The three-day retreat includes our core program modules: Ethics and Leadership Development, Public Speaking, Negotiation, Financial literacy, Advocacy and Identity/Voice workshops. Ethical leadership retreats also include additional modules such as ethical and effective writing, mentoring/networking and civic education based on faculty availability and Woodhull participant need assessment. Meditation, hiking, journaling and group discussions are encouraged.

Target Audience:
Women, ages 21-early 30’s who are interested in increasing their capacity for professional and personal development through training workshops, group discussions and introspective work.

Subsidized Price:
$395 for 3 day retreat, $650 for 5 day retreat, includes food, accommodations and materials. Limited scholarships available for young women’s retreats only, based on need and availability. To apply for one, complete application form question # 5.

Women’s Leadership Retreat Description

Overview:
Women are invited to register for Woodhull’s Women’s Renewal Leadership retreat. Spend a weekend away in a beautiful retreat center and return home with renewed leadership energy. Enjoy provocative roundtables on ways to bring ethics into your life every day; brush up on best-practices communication strategies; and learn how to negotiate a raise or more help with the kids. Learn tools to add balance to your busy lives; explore ways to navigate changes — big and small — confidently and creatively; and sharpen skills in finances and investment. Join in a yoga class, hike, swim, journal or read.

Format:
A team of committed, professional women teach small group leadership seminars at Woodhull’s retreat center 2.5 hours upstate New York. The weekend is intended to energize and invigorate women’s minds, bodies and spirits through the exchange of ideas; the acquiring of concrete leadership tools, and the relaxation and self-reflection time spent in the fresh air and beauty of the country amongst a community of ethical women leaders.

Target Audience:
Women, in their thirties and forties, who are interested in increasing their capacity for professional and personal development through training workshops, discussion groups, and introspective work.

Alumnae Retreats

Alumnae are invited back to enjoy our beautiful retreat center. These retreats are designed to build upon the basic skills attained during their initial retreat experience at Woodhull. Each retreat is topic specific. Teams of professionals specializing in the specific area of concentration will be present for in-depth study and discussion.

These three day intensive retreats were developed to assist the Woodhull alumnae in achieving a sense of mastery and understanding in the specific topic area. A focus on practical application of skills will be maintained.

Mother Daughter Retreat

(Target Audience Mothers and Daughters – approximate target age group for daughters is 11-14)

Overview:
Mothers and daughters are invited to spend a weekend away in a beautiful retreat center and return home refreshed and reinvigorated. Enjoy small group learning about conflict resolution, meditation and ethical parenting. Rethink ways to bring balance and understanding into both of your lives. Workshops on ethical behavior and decision making will be held for both mothers and daughters.

Format:
A team of committed, professional women will work in small group settings at our beautiful retreat center, located 2.5 hours north of New York City. The weekend is intended to refresh and reinvigorate both mothers and daughters. We will work with bodies, minds and spirits through the exchange of ideas; acquiring concrete moral and ethical tools, and the relaxation and self-reflection time spent in the fresh air and beauty of the country amongst a community of ethical women leaders.

Wise Women’s Retreat

(Approximate age of participants: 45+)

Overview:
This retreat is designed for the Woman with extensive life experience. You are invited to spend a weekend away in a beautiful retreat center just 2 1/2 hours north of New York City. Return home with renewed leadership energy. Workshops and roundtable discussions will be held on aging and power; mentoring and role modeling; relationships and maintaining identity.

Format:
A team of committed professional women will hold small group discussions and workshops. The weekend is intended to energize and invigorate women’s minds, bodies and spirits through the exchange of ideas; the acquiring of concrete leadership tools, relaxation and self-reflection time spent in the fresh air and beauty of the country amongst a community of ethical women leaders. Participants may partake in a yoga class, hiking, social time, meditation and quiet contemplation.

Dinner/Discussions – Educational Series

Overview:
The series is designed to expand and enrich empowerment training, practical skills and ethical knowledge. Monthly small group discussions focused on specific topics requested by the Women of Woodhull. These monthly Dinner/Discussion groups will be conducted in our Manhattan office and will be led by mid-career Ethical Leaders whom we have asked to share their expertise in specific fields of concentration that we have chosen in order to bolster and deepen our initial training, offer the alumnae a continually enriching world of role models and mentors, show them various career, work/family and activism paths, and support the alumnae over time in their own development as leaders, workers, family members and citizens.

A limited number of seats will be available to women who have not attended a Woodhull Institute retreat as of yet. A light dinner will be served.

Professional development topics slated for 2003 include: Advanced Negotiations/Ethical Negotiating; Financial Literacy/Philanthropy and the Ethics of Using Money; Building a Career in the Media/The Ethical Use of Communications; Clear Writing Workshops; Resume Preparation Workshops; Starting a Non-Profit Organization; Basic Fundraising; How to Run for Office/Ethical Campaigning; Work/Family Balance – Having a Life; and How to be Mentored/How to Mentor.
